Hermes / Instagram

With Hermes, you can post to X/Twitter right away with an API key, but Instagram is not as easy. But with the WoopSocial MCP, you can give Hermes the ability to directly post to Instagram, including posts, Reels and Carousels. Plus it can get your analytics per post, including Views, Shares and Likes, so Hermes can optimize your future content for you.

Hermes Doesn't Post to Instagram on Its Own

Hermes Agent, the self-hosted, open-source agent from Nous Research really does well what it's built for - running on your own server, remembering context across sessions, and posting to X natively out of the box. Instagram publishing isn't provided and that's intentional rather than an oversight. Hermes is built around messaging channels like Telegram, Discord, Slack, and WhatsApp plus the X integration, and a full Instagram publishing stack is a genuinely different piece of engineering.

Here's why you can't just bolt Instagram on yourself in an afternoon. The Graph API only publishes to Business or Creator accounts, a personal profile isn't eligible at all, and that account has to be linked to a Facebook Page before Instagram will accept anything from it. Publishing itself isn't a single call either, it's a two-step container flow: you create a media container first, then publish it in a separate step once Instagram has processed it. And Advanced Access, the level you need to actually post for a real account rather than a handful of test users, requires Meta's own app review process, a process that can take weeks and isn't guaranteed to pass on the first try. If you want the full technical breakdown of what that involves, our Instagram API Alternative guide covers the Graph API side in depth.

Here's where the gap is - none of that is what you actually want. You want to connect Hermes to Instagram and tell it "post this to my feed," and have it just work, without becoming a part-time Graph API integration project on top of everything else Hermes already does for you.

WoopSocial Gives Hermes Instagram Publishing

WoopSocial is a unified social media API with an MCP server built for exactly this. One connection, and Hermes can publish and schedule to Instagram, plus Facebook, LinkedIn, X, Pinterest, TikTok, YouTube, Threads, and Bluesky, all through the same MCP, so this isn't an Instagram-only bridge you'll need to replace the moment you want to post somewhere else.

Here's the part worth being specific about: WoopSocial is already a reviewed Meta client, so you skip Meta App Review entirely. No screencast to record, no permission justification to write up, no sitting in a queue for weeks hoping it comes back approved. That alone is usually the biggest single reason people don't wire up Instagram publishing themselves.

Your Hermes agent never holds your Instagram credentials, either. It only holds your WoopSocial API key. WoopSocial resolves the account linkage, runs the container flow, and handles the media type differences behind the scenes, none of that becomes Hermes' problem or yours. That separation matters more than it might sound, it means a compromised WoopSocial key exposes your posting access, not your actual Instagram login, and it means you're not storing a long-lived Instagram token anywhere inside your Hermes config.

And when something happens, whether successful or failure it reports back to you using plain terms, rather than a raw Graph API error code which you'll need to have to look up. If a post fails because a Reel was not the right aspect ratio or a token required refreshing you'll hear it as a sentence, not a JSON blob you have to cross-reference against Meta's documentation. This is what the Hermes social media Instagram publishing looks like once set up - communication, not error logs on a dashboard.

In terms of functionality, the MCP connection is functioning as a Hermes agent social media skill, even though it's shipped as an MCP server instead of an MCP skill file. This is the direct answer to the Instagram posting question: there isn't a native path, WoopSocial's connection is the path.

Connect Hermes to Instagram in 3 Steps

Step 1: Get your WoopSocial API key

Free, takes about 70 seconds. Connect your Instagram Business or Creator account inside the WoopSocial dashboard while you're there.

Step 2: Add the WoopSocial MCP server to Hermes

Open your Hermes config file (~/.hermes/config.yaml) and add WoopSocial as a remote MCP server under mcp_servers:

yaml
mcp_servers:
  woopsocial:
    url: "https://api.woopsocial.com/mcp?api_key=YOUR_WOOPSOCIAL_API_KEY"

Restart Hermes (hermes chat), and it will automatically discover WoopSocial's tools at startup.

Step 3: Tell Hermes to post

Just talk to it normally: "Post this image and caption to Instagram, and schedule the Reel for Friday evening."

You do not need to have a Meta developer app created or a container flow managed by hand; you will not need to do any of the coding either. The MCP handles Instagram's requirements underneath the conversation. And by having Hermes do all scheduled work through cron, and having WoopSocial handle scheduling inherently, Hermes will be able to post to Instagram while you are asleep. You can queue a week of posts on a Sunday night and let the cron jobs carry it through to Friday without you checking in once.

Worth saying plainly: you do still need an Instagram Business or Creator account linked to a Facebook Page - that's Instagram's own rule, not something WoopSocial imposes.

Instagram Posts, in Plain Language

Once it's connected, this is genuinely how you'll talk to it:

  • "Post this image and caption to Instagram now"
  • "Schedule this Reel for Friday at 6pm"
  • "Post this carousel to Instagram"
  • "Turn my latest blog post into an Instagram caption and queue it"

One Skill, Nine Platforms

Here's the bonus: the same MCP connection that gives Hermes Instagram also gives it Facebook, LinkedIn, X, Pinterest, TikTok, YouTube, Threads, and Bluesky. Set it up once, and Hermes can post anywhere.

Pricing is flat and predictable, the API and MCP access come on every plan, no separate charge for connecting Hermes specifically. Current WoopSocial pricing:

PlanPriceAccountsAPI/MCP access
Free$0/month2Included
Pro$19/month20Included
Business$49/month100Included
Max$799/month2,500Included

WoopSocial maintains the actual platform integrations and keeps its Meta review current, when Instagram changes its Graph API, or when any of the other eight platforms change theirs, that's WoopSocial's maintenance work.

Give Your Hermes Agent Instagram Publishing

You already have Hermes running. Adding Instagram publishing is a config file edit and an API key, not a new developer app, not an app review queue, not code.

FAQ

Can Hermes post to Instagram?

Hermes doesn't have built-in functionality for posting to Instagram. Instead Hermes has an X skill shipped as default - it connects to the WoopSocial MCP which gives it the ability to publish and schedule Instagram posts via natural language requests.

Do I need an Instagram Business account?

Yes. Instagram's Graph API only publishes to Business or Creator accounts linked to a Facebook Page. The Graph API requires this for publishing, WoopSocial handles everything after the account setup.

Does Hermes need my Instagram password?

No. Hermes only ever holds your WoopSocial API key. WoopSocial resolves your Instagram account access on its own side, your Instagram login never touches Hermes' config or memory.

Can Hermes schedule Reels?

Yes. Because WoopSocial has native scheduling and Hermes runs on cron, you can ask Hermes to queue Reels and feed posts for specific times and it will publish them without you being online.

What other platforms can Hermes post to?

The same WoopSocial MCP connection also covers Facebook, LinkedIn, X, Pinterest, TikTok, YouTube, Threads, and Bluesky, so connecting it once gives Hermes publishing access across all nine platforms, not just Instagram.

Can the Hermes Agent read Instagram analytics?

It absolutely can! Once your post, Reel or carousel is live, you can just ask Hermes to get the analytics for that post. It then gets the data from WoopSocial, which gets it directly from Instagram. Just type the question for Hermes and it will look it up for you immediately.
