What is an Instagram MCP server?
An Instagram MCP server is a tool server that lets an AI agent work with Instagram via the Model Context Protocol (MCP). The agent makes a request, the server acts on Instagram, and the result comes back into the chat. Instagram MCP servers come in two kinds - readers and scrapers, which provide data and analytics, and publishers which create content. WoopSocial is a publisher. Meta also has its own MCP servers that are focused on ads and developer tools.
Does Instagram have an official MCP server?
Not for organic posting (as of October 2026). Meta has a few official MCP servers - can be found in its MCP documentation, but none of them is for publishing organic Instagram posts. They are:
- Meta Ads MCP: campaigns, ads and catalogs.
- Meta Social Technologies MCP: formerly Developer Tools. It covers apps, webhooks and API health.
- WhatsApp Business Tools MCP: WhatsApp Business.
So if you want an AI agent to publish a Reel, you need a publishing server.
| Meta’s official MCPs | Typical community servers | ||
|---|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Ads, developer tooling, WhatsApp | Often scraping and data | Publishing and scheduling |
| Organic posts and Reels | No | Some, via your own Meta app | Yes |
| Meta App Review on your side | n/a | Yes, for your own app | No |
| Scheduling | No | Rarely | Yes |
| Trial Reels | No | Rarely | Yes |
If you run Instagram ads, Meta’s Ads MCP is the right tool for that, and you can use both.
What your AI agent can do with Instagram
Once connected, your agent can do nine things on Instagram.
| What you ask | What happens |
|---|---|
| Post an image | Publishes a feed image (postType: POST). |
| Post a carousel | Publishes a POST with multiple images or videos. |
| Publish or schedule a Reel with a cover | Publishes a Reel (postType: REEL) and sets its cover. |
| Post a Story | Publishes a Story (postType: STORY). |
| Post a Trial Reel | Shows the Reel to non-followers first, then graduates it manually or automatically. |
| Schedule with a time zone | Queues the post with SCHEDULE_FOR_LATER, converted to UTC. |
| Save as a draft | Holds the post in WoopSocial for you to review. |
| Cross-post to Facebook and TikTok | Sends a different caption to each platform with contentOverride. |
| Read performance | Returns views, likes, comments, shares and saves for each post. |
How to connect an Instagram MCP server to your agent (3 steps)
- Get your MCP URL. Create a free WoopSocial account (takes just ~70 seconds to set up) and open the API access page. Use the OAuth URL, https://api.woopsocial.com/mcp, for clients that support sign-in, or the API-key version for clients that don’t. The key sits inside that URL, so treat the whole URL like a password.
- Connect your Instagram account. In WoopSocial, connect it with Facebook Login. You need an Instagram Business or Creator account linked to a Facebook Page.
- Add WoopSocial to your agent. In Claude, Cursor, ChatGPT or another MCP client, add WoopSocial as a remote MCP server and authorize it. Then ask: “List my social accounts in WoopSocial.” If your Instagram account comes back, you’re ready to post. Our MCP setup guide covers each client.
A recorded conversation
This is a recorded session, not a mock-up. The prompt was: “Schedule this video as a Reel for Friday 18:00 London time, use the first frame as the cover, and write a hook-first caption.”
The tool chain: the media upload session (or media_list, if the file was uploaded in the dashboard) → posts_validate → posts_create, with postType: REEL.
Instagram MCP prompts to try
You can use any of these prompts with your agent. A good prompt names the platform, the content, the date and time, and a time zone.
- “Turn these 6 photos into a carousel and schedule it for Sunday 11:00.”
- “Post this clip as a Trial Reel and graduate it automatically if it performs.”
- “Share this image to our Story at 9:00 tomorrow.”
- “Write 3 caption options, then schedule the one I pick.”
- “Post this video as a Reel on Instagram and Facebook and as a TikTok, with a different caption for each.”
- “Which of last week’s Reels got the most saves?”
Instagram requirements and limits
These limits come from Instagram and Meta, WoopSocial takes these into account for your accounts. For more details, check our Meta’s content publishing docs (as of October 2026).
- API posts: up to 100 per rolling 24 hours. A carousel counts as one.
- Carousels: up to 10 items.
- Reels: 3 seconds to 15 minutes.
- Captions: up to 2,200 characters, 30 hashtags and 20 @mentions.
- Stories: disappear after 24 hours.
WoopSocial vs Instagram’s API directly
An MCP server can only help if the posting underneath works. When you go directly to the API from Instagram you're dealing with all this - all of which WoopSocial handles, so your agent only has to ask for the post.
| Instagram API direct | |
|---|---|
| Meta App Review for publishing permissions | Already approved |
| A container flow - create a container, wait for processing, then publish | One post request |
| No scheduling parameter in Meta’s content publishing API | SCHEDULE_FOR_LATER and drafts |
| Business and Creator accounts only | The same requirement, handled at connection |
What it doesn’t do
WoopSocial is a publishing server, so some of Instagram features are out of its scope:
- Comments, replies and DMs
- Collaborator or location tags
- First comments
- Story stickers or licensed music
- Personal accounts
- Scraping of other people’s profiles
