A social media *widget* refers to a small, interactive, often customizable application or tool that is embedded within a website, blog, or social media platform, serving to enhance user experience and streamline functionality. Widgets are many things, but above all, they are tools that help people do things really fast—like, instantaneously fast. They are tools that, in the blink of an eye, make content both accessible and immediately actionable.

And they are not stuck in place; like many digital components today, they are quite mobile. They don't require users to leave the page they're on, yet in a sense, they enable users to move around the online world just as efficiently as if they were popping in and out of portals. From the perspective of web marketing, widgets are a good way to connect up with the social media universe, and they also help with looking impressive, providing analytics, and efficiently intermingling content with users' actions.

For instance, a simple share button enables a user to post virtually anything to Facebook or Twitter without the user leaving the page she's on, while a comment widget allows a user to say something in the comments section that's visible to everyone who visits the page (and with the help of some well-planned efficient alongside with the virtual wheel of Facebook, the person leaving the comment might be a person who uses Facebook as well).
