Account Verification

An often-used symbol for this process is a verification badge, like a checkmark, that appears beside the name of the account in question. This badge tells users that the account is a legitimate one that has been scrutinized and endorsed by the platform itself.

Account verification's purpose is to ensure clarity and credibility. It differentiates real accounts from fan pages, duplicate profiles, parody accounts, or imposters. By doing this, it reduces the spread of misinformation and impersonation.

Although the specific actions and eligibility standards for verification differ from one platform to another, the common way of achieving verification is for the account holder to formally request it and to submit evidence to demonstrate that they are who they say they are. This evidence often includes government-issued IDs, business documents, or references to established, third-party entities.

This aspect is frequently given priority for people or organizations that are susceptible to impersonation or are well recognized in their profession, including many notable figures like celebrities, social media influencers, business leaders, journalists, political figures, and government officials.

The status of being verified can convey trust, authority, and exclusivity. It's a coveted title. But not every platform unthinkingly dishes out verification to anyone who asks. Platforms may apply a bit of extra scrutiny to distinguish 'public figures' from the rest of us. They may ask themselves, 'Is this person even notable enough for us to devote some pixels to their visage?'
